I have heard it said over and over again that water seeks its own level. I didn’t really understand what that meant until I was experienced enough in life to understand and measure values, integrity and loyalty. Water seeks its own level simply means that quality people of integrity find other quality people of integrity and visa versa. It means that high quality finds high quality and low quality finds low quality. This is true in business and in life.
In this blog I am speaking specifically about friendship and employment. It is challenging to find deep friendships with people who will do what “real” friends do. They listen, they are honest with us, they cheer our victories and they walk with us in our deepest challenges. These people are out there but we must speak and get to know a lot of people until we find the few who we call “real” friends. However once we find people (water) at our level, we have the opportunity to develop and nurture long lasting and very deep relationships. We have the opportunity to pour into people and have them pout into us. What an amazing experience!
The same challenge exists for employees searching for employers who respect, honor and celebrate their employees. I believe positive employee friendly corporate cultures can be found but they are the exception and not the rule. In these challenging economic times where unemployment is nearing record levels, it is hard to be selective about which employers we accept jobs from. But if we are selective and we choose to work for leaders and for companies that value us, honor us, celebrate our loyalty and committment and create a great culture for us to operate within, we will give everything we have to the success of the company. The result is great synergy amongst the employees and a motivated and hard working work force focused on serving the needs of our co-workers and customers.
The same advice is true for employers who are hiring. The company succeeds or fails on the efforts of the people who work there. Be great at hiring and our company and its customers will benefit. Hire poorly and the other employees, customers and vendors suffer for our poor hiring choices.
Water seeks its own level in life and in business. We have the opportunity to strive to surround ourselves with people who have high moral standards, are smart, caring, trustworthy, loyal, honest and live their lives with integrity. Choosing those people paves the way for succeess at home and at work.
